Finger Lakes: Chief Officer cruises

As expected, once-beaten filly Chief Officer was far too fast for her male rivals in the 44th running of the New York Breeders' Futurity at Finger Lakes.

After quickly clearing her seven rivals, Chief Officer ($3.10), ridden by Fernando Jara for trainer Bill Mott, shook off a brief threat from Aspirant winner Endless Circle approaching the turn and effortlessly drew off by 5 1/2 lengths. Her time for six furlongs was 1:11.16.

In becoming the 10th filly to win the futurity, Chief Officer earned $150,311 of the track-record $250,310 purse.

She has now won 3 of 4 starts, with her only loss coming in the Grade 3 Schuylerville at Saratoga, where she finished third.

Horse Thief, a maiden making only his second start, rallied to gain second at 28-1, finishing a half-length in front of Solid Strike third.

* No Reason ($6) had to be much the best to overcome an adventurous trip in the $75,000 New York Oaks. Despite ducking out at the start, going four wide in a six-horse field into the first turn, and being steered three wide entering the stretch, No Reason still was able to score by 3 1/2 lengths in the 1 1/16-mile race for New York-bred 3-year-old fillies.

Fly to Me nosed out 8-5 favorite Towering Escape for second.

Ridden by Channing Hill for trainer Scott Blasi, No Reason has now won 5 of 12 starts, including two statebred stakes. Her winning time was 1:45.39.
