Filly upsets Kiss My Hocks in Rainbow Futurity
Trendi, one of two fillies in a field of 10 2-year-old Quarter Horses, scored a major upset in Sunday’s $900,000 Rainbow Futurity at Ruidoso Downs, finishing a neck in front of 1-5 favorite Kiss My Hocks.
The Rainbow Futurity was the first loss in six starts for Kiss My Hocks, who won the Sam Houston and Ruidoso futurities earlier this year.
Trendi, ridden by Larry Gamez, had a clean start from post 3, while Kiss My Hocks broke to the inside and bumped a rival under jockey Cody Jensen from the outside post. The longest shot in the field, Trendi ($91.20) led throughout, finishing a neck in front of Kiss My Hocks, who closed well to just miss.
Eagle On the Fly finished third, a neck behind Kiss My Hocks.
Trendi ran 400 yards in 19.52 seconds, winning for the third time in four starts. Owned by William Smith of Claremore, Okla., Trendi has earned $389,790. She beat maidens in her debut at Delta Downs in April, and won a division of the Ruidoso Futurity trials on May 23. Trendi did not qualify for the Ruidoso Futurity final, but returned to finish second in a division of the Rainbow Futurity trials on July 4, earning the second-fastest of five qualifying times that day.
By Stoli, Trendi is a full-sister to Stolis Winner, the winner of the Rainbow and All American futurities in 2008.
