Fillies dominate French race for first-timers

Alan Shuback|Jul 01, 2010

Deauville's four-day July meeting that serves as a table setter for its prestigious August meeting opened on Thursday with the seaside track's annual juvenile oddity, the listed Prix Yacowlef for horses making their racing debuts. Won in the past by Riverman, Dahlia, Miswaki, and Machiavellian, it has been dominated in recent years by fillies.

On Thursday, fillies filled the first five places as the Robert Collet-trained Wizz Kid, a daughter of Prix Morny winner Whipper, beat Katerini by 1 1/2 lengths, getting the straight five furlongs in a stakes record 57.90 seconds.
