Fiery Lady can give Meah first stakes win
ARCADIA, Calif. – Last Saturday, trainer Anna Meah won the first race of her career with Stringent in a $12,500 claimer at Santa Anita.
Meah, 26, will be after her first stakes win on Saturday when Fiery Lady runs in the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint – at least a stakes win she can keep.
Last November, shortly after Meah began training, Excellent Sunset finished first for her in the Kathryn Crosby Stakes at Del Mar, but was disqualified and placed second for causing interference.
Fiery Lady, claimed for $32,000 in November, was second in a division of the Miss America Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Golden Gate Fields on Dec. 8 in her debut for Meah, who has a 17-horse stable.
Meah has had 21 starters.
The Filly and Mare Turf Sprint will determine if Fiery Lady runs in more turf sprints.
“There are so many Cal-bred stakes down the hill,” she said. “If she can go well in that, there would be a lot of opportunities. We know she can go farther.”
The Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint is one of four stakes, all for statebreds, on an 11-race program that begins at 11:30 a.m.
The $200,000 Unusual Heat Turf Classic at 1 1/8 miles is led by Rye, who won the race last year; Ashleyluvssugar, the 2017 winner; Marckie’s Water, who was fourth in the Grade 2 Hollywood Turf Cup at Del Mar on Nov. 23; and He Will, a troubled fourth in the 2018 running.
