Fierceness, the winner of the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and likely champion 2-year-old colt for 2023, closed at 8-1 to lead all individual interests in the third Kentucky Derby future bet, well behind the overall favorite, the “all others” entry, at $6.88 for every $2 win wager. Only one individual horse made a big move compared to the morning-line odds, though several horses leap-frogged the morning-line second choice, Locked. Track Phantom, who won the Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds over the weekend, closed at 18-1, compared to his 60-1 morning-line odds going into the pool, which opened on Friday and closed on Sunday night. Locked, 18-1 at the close of the pool, was passed by Sierra Leone, who closed at 13-1, and Dornoch, who closed at 15-1. Locked, who won the Breeders’ Futurity and finished third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, was listed as the second choice on the morning line, at 15-1. Total handle in the win pool was $254,977, with an additional $79,745 in the exacta pool. Churchill Downs, which administers the Future pools, said that the third-pool total was up 7 percent over last year compared to the pool held over the same weekend. The next Kentucky Derby Future Wager bet is scheduled for Feb. 16-18. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
