Fields stay intact for Arlington Million, Beverly D.

All 10 horses pre-entered Friday in the Arlington Million passed through the race’s final entry stage Tuesday.
The connections of Captivating Moon and Bandua still were said to be weighing options after pre-entering, but both horses wound up in Saturday’s race, one of three Grade 1s on the card along with the Beverly D. and the Secretariat.
Trainers Chad Brown and Aidan O’Brien dominate the entries. Brown has Bricks and Mortar, the heavy favorite for the Million, as well as the race’s second choice and 2018 winner, Robert Bruce. In the Beverly D., where Brown swept the top three placings in 2018, he runs Sistercharlie, the solid favorite and 2018 winner, as well as Competitionofideas and pacemaker Thais, who held on for third in the 2018 renewal. Brown’s Secretariat entrants, Fog of War and Valid Point, also will attract considerable support.
O’Brien cross-entered 4-year-old filly Magic Wand in the Million and the Beverly D., though she seems more likely for the Million since O’Brien also entered Hunting Horn in the Million. Hunting Horn has had his moments but recently has been employed as a pacemaker for other O’Brien-trained horses in major races. O’Brien also has another live entrant for the Beverly D. in the 3-year-old filly Fleeting. Never No More and Van Beethoven run for O’Brien in the Secretariat.
The only defections from pre-entries come in the Secretariat, which won’t include Bizzee Channel and Journeyman.
The Secretariat has been changed to one mile this year from its historical 1 ¼-mile distance to avoid conflicting with the rich Saratoga Derby, which was run this past weekend.
After an unusually wet spring and early summer the Chicago area has turned very dry in recent weeks, making the Arlington course firm and fast-playing. The Million Day forecast as of Tuesday calls for sunshine and a high temperature of 81 degrees, with nothing more than slight chance of midweek rain forecast in terms of precipitation.
