Field favored in Pool 1 of 2020 Kentucky Derby Future Wager

Marty McGee|Dec 01, 2019

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, closed as usual as a decisive favorite in Pool 1 of the 2020 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which closed Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern after a four-day wagering window.

With $284,317 in the win pool, the field (No. 24) closed at even-money and was followed by Tiz the Law (11-1), Dennis’ Moment (12-1), Independence Hall (13-1), and Maxfield (13-1), with all other separately listed horses at 24-1 or higher. “Any filly,” offered as No. 23, closed at 57-1.

Another $65,995 was bet in exactas, making for a combined handle of $350,312, up 36 percent from the $258,389 bet into Pool 1 toward the 2019 Derby. The lowest $2 exacta will-pay combination is the field over Independence Hall (24-13), worth $54.60.

This is the 22nd year Churchill Downs has offered parimutuel futures, and the field has closed as the favorite in Pool 1 every time.

Pool 1 coincided with wagering into the Derby Sires wager, which was offered for the fifth year. With $47,082 in combined handle, up 43 percent from last year, the field is a slight 9-2 favorite over Constitution (5-1).

The eventual 2019 Derby winner, Country House, was still a maiden last November and therefore part of the Pool 1 field, which closed as the 6-5 favorite. His sire, Lookin At Lucky, also was in the field (5-1) for the Sires wager.

Pool 2 is set for Feb. 7-9, Pool 3 for March 6-8, and Pool 4 for April 3-5. The Kentucky Oaks future wager will coincide with Pool 3.

The record for handle in a single pool is $631,304, set in 2012 (Pool 2), while the record for aggregate handle in a single year was $1,893,353, set in 2018.

In the case of field horses filling both exacta slots, the next-best finish by a separately listed horse will count toward the winning combination.

The 146th Derby will be run May 2, 2020.
