The mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, finished as the 2-1 favorite in Pool 3 of the 2022 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which closed Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern following the customary three-day run. After the field, the Pool 3 favorites are Smile Happy (8-1), Classic Causeway (13-1), Mo Donegal (14-1), and Emmanuel (15-1). The field, as usual, was favored in Pool 1 (3-5) and Pool 2 (9-5). Smile Happy, who runs Saturday in the Risen Star at Fair Grounds, also was the 8-1 favorite among individually listed horses in those first two pools held Nov. 26-29 and Jan. 21-23. As with the first two pools, there were no Bob Baffert trainees listed as separate wagering interests in Pool 3. Baffert has been banned by Churchill Downs from running horses in the Derby the next two years, a policy stemming from his 2021 winner, Medina Spirit, having tested positive for a medication overage. This means the Baffert-trained Corniche, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Nov. 5; Messier, a 15-length winner of the Robert Lewis Memorial on Feb. 6; and Southwest winner Newgrange once again were lumped into the field with all other 3-year-olds under his care. Pool 3 drew $235,012 in win bets and $93,448 in exactas for a combined handle of $328,460. Pool 1 drew $326,448, and Pool 2 got $361,209. Last year in Pool 3, the field closed as the 3-1 favorite, followed by Life Is Good (7-1) and Essential Quality (8-1). Medina Spirit was 25-1 in Pool 3. Total handle was $388,987. Pool 4 will be held March 11-13, and Pool 5 will be from March 31-April 2. A Kentucky Oaks futures pool will coincide with Pool 4. In the case of field horses finishing first and second, the highest-placed individual horse counts as the bottom half of the exacta. The 148th Derby will be run May 7.
