Field closes at 6-5 in Pool 1 of Kentucky Derby Future Wager

Game Winner wins the 2018 Breeders Cup Juvenile
Barbara D. Livingston Game Winner remains unbeaten in four starts by winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile on Friday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, closed as usual as a decisive favorite in Pool 1 of the 2019 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which closed Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern after a four-day wagering window.

With $186,470 in the win pool, the field closed at 6-5 and was followed by Game Winner (5-1), Coliseum (10-1), Instagrand (10-1), and Improbable (17-1). A new entity offered as No. 23, “any filly,” closed at 66-1. Another $71,919 was bet in exactas, making for combined handle of $258,389, up 3 percent from the $250,259 bet into Pool 1 toward the 2018 Derby. The lowest $2 exacta will-pay combination of Game Winner over the field (6-24) is worth $41.60.

This is the 21st year Churchill Downs has offered parimutuel futures, and the field has closed as the favorite in Pool 1 every time.

Pool 1 coincided with wagering into the Derby Sires wager, which was offered for the fourth year. With $32,924 in combined handle, down 23 percent from the $42,953 bet last year, the field closed as a lukewarm 9-2 favorite over Tapit (6-1), Candy Ride (7-1), and Into Mischief (7-1). The lowest $2 exacta will-pay is Candy Ride over Tapit (3-17), worth $54.40.

The 2018 Derby winner, Justify, last November was still unraced and therefore part of the Pool 1 field, which closed as the 6-5 favorite. His sire, the late Scat Daddy, was 26-1.

Pool 2 is set for Feb. 8-10, Pool 3 for March 8-10, and Pool 4 for April 5-7. The Kentucky Oaks future wager will coincide with Pool 3.

The record for handle in a single pool is $631,304, set in 2012, while the record for aggregate handle in a single year was $1,893,353, set last year.

In the case of field horses filling both exacta slots, the next-best finish by a separately listed horse will count toward the winning combination.

The 145th Derby will be run May 4.
