Field of 14 expected for Queen's Plate on Saturday.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Entries will be taken Wednesday for the 160th running of the $1 million Queen’s Plate at Woodbine on Saturday, and 14 Canadian-bred 3-year-olds appear likely to pass through the entry box for the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown.
The prospective field is led by Avie’s Flatter, who will look to become the first horse to win the Coronation Futurity at 2 and the Queen’s Plate at 3 since Norcliffe in 1975-1976. Avie’s Flatter won the Grade 3 Transylvania Stakes at Keeneland in April and hasn’t raced since a sixth-place finish in the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs on May 4. He’s worked extensively since his start in the American Turf, including a four-furlong breeze in 47.80 seconds on Sunday.
“We thought about running him in the Plate Trial, but we want to go in with a fresh horse,” trainer Josie Carroll said.
Carroll will have two horses in the Queen’s Plate, as she’ll also send He’s a Macho Man. He’s a Macho Man hasn’t raced since winning an allowance event over 1 1/16 miles on Tapeta on May 20. He worked five furlongs in 59.80 seconds on Sunday.
Woodbine Oaks winner Desert Ride and Plate Trial Stakes winner Pay for Peace are among the Queen’s Plate probables. Desert Ride earned an 83 Beyer Speed Figure with a late rally to win the Oaks by a neck over Bold Script for trainer Neil Howard on June 8, while Pay for Peace earned a 71 Beyer in his 1 3/4-length victory over Federal Law for trainer Rachel Halden. Desert Ride shipped back to Churchill Downs for her final Queen’s Plate preparations, breezing five furlongs on dirt in 1:02.60 on Friday, while Pay for Peace breezed five furlongs in 1:00.40 on Saturday over Tapeta at Woodbine.
Three other trainers will have a pair of horses for the Queen’s Plate, including Mark Casse, who will be looking to win the Plate for the second year in a row. Casse will send out Wando Stakes winner Skywire and Queenston Stakes winner Federal Law, who both finished second in their final prep for the Queen’s Plate. Skywire was second in the Grade 3 Marine Stakes, while Federal Law was second in the Plate Trial Stakes. Both Skywire and Federal Law worked four furlongs at Woodbine on Sunday, with Skywire covering the distance in 47 seconds, while Federal Law was clocked at 47.60 seconds.
Trainer Kevin Attard will saddle Jammin Still and Lucas n’ Lori in the Queen’s Plate. Jammin Still will be looking to rebound off of a seventh-place finish in the Plate Trial Stakes, while Lucas n’ Lori was most recently sixth in a turf allowance June 8. Both Attard trainees breezed on Saturday at Woodbine, as Jammin Still covered four furlongs in 48 seconds, while Lucas n’ Lori worked in 49.60 seconds.
Trainer Michael De Paulo will send out maidens Rising Star and Moon Swings in the Queen’s Plate. Both horses ran in the Plate Trial on June 8, with Rising Star finishing third and Moon Swings fourth. Both horses worked Sunday for the Queen’s Plate, each covering five furlongs in 59.20 seconds.
A pair of American shippers are sheduled to start. One Bad Boy is in from California for trainer Richard Baltas off a third-place finish in the Alcatraz Stakes over Tapeta at Golden Gate Fields on May 19. Meanwhile, Tone Broke will enter the Queen’s Plate without a race over a synthetic track, but ships to Woodbine off of a runner-up finish in the Sir Barton Stakes at Pimlico on May 18 for trainer Steven Asmussen. One Bad Boy worked at Woodbine on Saturday morning, breezing four furlongs in 47.80 seconds. Tone Broke breezed four furlongs in 49 seconds at Churchill Downs on Sunday.
Rounding out the expected field are Krachenwagen for owner-trainer Angus Buntain and Suitedconnected for trainer Robert Barnett. Krachenwagen finished fifth in the Plate Trial, while Suitedconnected was seventh in a turf allowance over 1 1/16 miles on June 8 in his most recent start. Both horses ran in an allowance over 1 1/16-miles on May 20, and they were separated by 1 1/2 lengths, with Krachenwagen third and Suitedconnected eighth. Suitedconnected breezed five furlongs on 59.40 seconds Sunday morning, while Krachenwagen drilled a mile in 1:42.20 on June 19.
Wednesday’s post position draw for the Queen’s Plate is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and will be streamed live on Woodbine’s website.
