Felipe Valdez re-breaks collarbone
ARCADIA, Calif. - Jockey Felipe Valdez will be sidelined for an undetermined period after sustaining a broken collarbone for the second time in five months in a spill in Saturday’s third race at Santa Anita.
Valdez was hospitalized after El Nino Terrible fell on the turn of an $8,000 claimer at 1 1/16 miles. Brandon O’Bryan, Valdez’s agent, said on Sunday that he was not sure how long Valdez will be sidelined. O’Bryan said Valdez is scheduled to undergo surgery on the collarbone.
El Nino Terrible was euthanized as a result of injuries sustained in the race.
Valdez, 37, sustained a broken collarbone when he was unseated in a race at Los Alamitos last December and did not return to riding until March 17. Valdez has one win in 10 mounts since his return.
Valdez won 45 races in 2015, one fewer than his career-best of 46 wins achieved in 1998. Valdez is a former leading rider at Portland Meadows, but missed more than three years of racing from late 2010 until early 2014 after sustaining a back injury in a spill at Hollywood Park.
