Fedalia has chance to bounce back in Thursday feature at Woodbine

Ron Gierkink|Jul 24, 2022

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Fedalia can rebound off an uncharacteristically poor showing in the wide-open Thursday feature at Woodbine.

The six-furlong main turf sprint combines Ontario-sired nonwinners-of-three allowance types with $40,000 nonwinners-of-three claimers, and goes as the seventh race on a card that begins at 5 p.m.

Fedalia nearly won a first-level allowance going five-eighths on the inner turf last September in her first start after earning her diploma. She got the winter off after tailing off on the Tapeta in the fall.

Fedalia was headed for victory while closing along the rail in her June 3 season opener against nonwinners of two rivals on the main turf, but she was impeded at the eighth pole and wound up second. In an easy decision for the stewards, she was promoted to first after the disqualification of Mitzi.

Fedalia was dismissed at 44-1 most recently on July 3 in a first-level allowance with a $32,000 claiming option. She raced wide throughout in the 7 1/2-furlong inner-turf race while fading from fourth to finish a well-beaten 11th.

Fedalia is descending to a logical spot after working a quick half-mile in 48.20 last Friday. Keveh Nicholls will ride the daughter of Fed Biz again for trainer Steve Attard, a successful combo.

Basalt Street is experimenting on the grass after running the race of her life last time when crushing $25,000 nonwinners-of-two claimers by 5 1/2 lengths with a 75 Beyer.

Basalt Street is by the 9 percent turf sire Uncaptured. Her dam annexed a $50,000 maiden claimer over this course in her best performance, but her only turf starter struggled over the surface.

Over the past five years, Basalt Street’s trainer, Kevin Attard, had a 13 percent strike rate with first-time turf runners, with a positive return on investment of $2.12.

Eleanor Powell is eligible to improve off a $14,000 claim by colorful owner Tommy Massis and trainer Dale Desruissaeux.

Eleanor Powell beat $15,000 nonwinners of two in her May 21 comeback traveling 6 1/2 furlongs, but then came up empty in a 1 1/16-mile optional starter. When switching to a mile on the main turf most recently, she made her way through traffic in the stretch to finish second.

Flippin is adding Lasix off a flat fifth at this level. She notched her first two starts against $25,000 claimers in two other Tapeta sprints in May. She’s by the 6 percent turf sire Flat Out, and her dam dropped two winners from three starters on the lawn.

War Empress ran well against $25,000 nonwinners of three in her two most recent excursions, finishing fourth over seven furlongs on the main turf July 3.

Spider Belle is shortening up off a belated fourth going long on the inner turf. Trainer Danny Vella has solid numbers with turnbacks.
