Favorite Colossus runs giant in Governor's Cup Derby
Favorite Colossus has won three races in his 10-race career and two of the victories have been in six-figure derbies at Los Alamitos.
Sunday, Favorite Colossus ($15.60) recorded a minor upset in the $175,000 Governor’s Cup Derby at 400 yards, closing from third in the final 100 yards to win by a nose over 1-2 favorite Monopolist. Ridden by Ruben Lozano, Favorite Colossus was timed in 19.67 seconds.
Monopolist, the fastest qualifier from the July 11 time trials, led in the final strides and finished a neck in front of third-place finisher Counting the Ways, who held an early lead.
Favorite Colossus won the $225,200 El Primero Del Ano Derby in March in an 11-1 upset, but was fourth in an allowance race at 350 yards in May and second behind Counting the Ways in a division of the Governor’s Cup Derby time trials.
Owned by Michelle and Jeff Cravens, Favorite Colossus is trained by Cesar De Alba, who won the Governor’s Cup Derby twice as a jockey – in 2013 with Scoop of Sunshine and in 2014 with Moonist. De Alba retired from riding in late 2018 and began training in 2019.
Favorite Colossus, a colt by Favorite Cartel, has earned $193,334. Aside from the derbies, his only other win was in a time trial for the Governor’s Cup Futurity in July 2020. Favorite Colossus was fourth in the Governor’s Cup Futurity.
Later this year, Favorite Colossus is likely to start in time trials for the Los Alamitos Super Derby on Oct. 16. The finale will be run on Nov. 7. Favorite Colossus was recently supplemented to the Super Derby for $30,000.
