Favored Docent by two in Classic

Joe DeVivo|Sep 21, 2002

Docent completed a day dominated by favorites when he drew off in the stretch to score a two-length victory over Hay Getoutofmyway in Saturday's $200,000 Maryland Million Classic at Pimlico.

A 4-year-old colt trained by Tim Ritchey and ridden by Jeremy Rose, Docent ($5) has now won his last three starts on dirt, all in stakes. He covered 1 3/16 miles on a fast track in 1:56.85.

Carney's Prospect tried to steal the race on the front end after setting modest fractions of 47.12 seconds for a half-mile and 1:11.63 for six furlongs, but his three-length lead evaporated when Rose asked Docent for run in early stretch.

Three other favorites won on the undercard, which included seven stakes worth $100,000 each.

* Heavily favored Undercover ($4.40), ridden by Mario Pino for trainer Anthony Dutrow, cruised to a 6 1/2-length victory in the Oaks for 3-year-old fillies. Her time for 1 1/16 miles was 1:43.90.

* Cherokee's Boy ($5.20) came back eight days after winning his maiden race to capture the Nursery for 2-year-olds by a length over Ironton. Trained by Gary Capuano and ridden by Ryan Fogelsonger, Cherokee's Boy ran six furlongs in 1:11.21.

* Object of Virtue ($26.40), whose only previous win came against maidens in a very slow race at Mountaineer Park, outfought Rachelle's Numbers by a neck in the Lassie for 2-year-old fillies. Ridden by Craig Perret for trainer Greg Foley, Object of Virtue ran six furlongs in 1:13.72.

* New York shipper Shopping for Love ($4.60), ridden by Richard Migliore for trainer Ken Nesky, romped to a 7 1/4-length victory in the Ladies for fillies and mares. Her time for 1 1/8 miles on firm turf was 1:48.61.

* Migliore won his second stakes of the day, this time for trainer Ben Perkins Jr., when he guided Blinded by Love ($13) to a three-length win in the Distaff Handicap for female sprinters. She ran six furlongs in 1:11.28.

* La Reine's Terms ($3.60) prevented Elberton from repeating in the Turf by catching him at the wire by a head. Ridden by Horatio Karamanos for trainer Lawrence Murray, the 7-year-old La Reine's Terms, winner of five straight races, was timed in 1:49.28 for 1 1/8 miles on turf.

* Deer Run ($10.20) went to the front early and held off a late charge by Smile My Lord to take the Sprint, giving Pino his second stakes win of the day. Deer Run, trained by Christopher Grove, ran six furlongs in 1:10.60.
