Faucheux vaults to top of standings with 8 for 14 week
The Fair Grounds trainer standings as of March 8: Brad Cox 32 wins, Bret Calhoun 31 wins, Ron Faucheux 25 wins.
Less than a week later, we have a new leader! Ron Faucheux, leading Fair Grounds trainer the last two meets, won with all three of his starters on the March 8 card. On March 9, Faucheux won with two of three. And when Royal Unlimited won the Sunday nightcap, it ran Faucheux’s record through the five-day race week to a mind-blowing 14-8-1-3. That gave him 33 winners at the meet and the lead in the race for leading trainer.
“March has been good for me the last several years,” Faucheux said. “Delta [Downs] ends and the people from there start to come in; all my races start to go.”
Has Faucheux fired all his bullets? He has not. He has horses in three races Wednesday, in five races Thursday, four races Friday, and one each Saturday and Sunday. Cox’s Fair Grounds string now mainly sticks to maiden special weights, allowances, and stakes. Cox lacks Faucheux’s day-to-day volume, while Calhoun, leading trainer much of the meet, has hit a dry spell.
“I think I can be competitive. We don’t get goofy with our entries,” said Faucheux. “We enter where they belong.”
And lately, most of them are winning.
