Father and son one-two in jockey standings

Bill Hodtwalker|May 20, 2009

The father-son riding duo of Luis Ranilla and son Jose have put on quite a show during the early part of Lincoln State Fair season and sit atop the jockey standings after two weekends of racing. The pair were involved in a couple of one-two finishes last weekend that were separated by less than a neck.

Luis Ranilla closed the gap on his son with a four-win day Sunday to pull within a win at 10-9 in the standings. Jose Ranilla scored riding triples on both Friday and Saturday and followed up with a double on Sunday to maintain his advantage. Chris Fackler is just behind the duo in third with eight wins after scoring a triple on Friday.

* Trainer Marv Johnson struggled through the Fonner Park meet this spring with just seven wins but has turned things around at Lincoln. After being shut out the first two days of the meet, he has sent out at least a winner a day, topped off by a four-win day last Friday and a double on Sunday. He leads the trainer standings with 10 wins.

Jason Wise sent out three winners on Saturday afternoon, including Sir Magic Man's $30.80 upset in the Speed Stakes, to hold second with seven wins.

Johnson's at a Boy Russ has accounted for a pair of wins already in the season, winning at the $2,000 claiming level on opening weekend and returning last Sunday to win for $3,500. Herb Riecken has the meet's other two-time winner in Jackie Bea Star, who also picked up her second on Sunday in a mile test over $2,500 company.

* Racing will be conducted Friday through Monday this weekend with a mystery voucher giveaway to the first 500 paid admissions on both Sunday and Monday. Memorial Day will also feature a T-shirt giveaway to the first 1,000 paid admissions. Following a three-day weekend to end the month of May, racing will be conducted Thursday through Sunday through the end of the meet on July 12.
