Fastest qualifiers head Zia stakes

Gun Battle and Arealstraitheart, the fastest qualifiers, will be the solid favorites in the $332,250 New Mexico Classic Futurity and the $163,380 New Mexico Classic Derby, respectively, on Sunday afternoon at Zia Park.

The futurity and derby are part of New Mexico Cup Day, with more than $2 million in purses for the stakes-filled program for New Mexico-bred Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses.

Gun Battle was second by a neck in the Grade 1, $1.9 million All American Futurity as the 5-2 favorite and came back to win his New Mexico Classic Futurity trial in 19.803 seconds, the fastest time from six trials.

Arealstraitheart won the Grade 1, $406,299 All American Derby by 1 3/4 lengths and then cruised to a one-length win in his New Mexico Cup Derby trial. He has earned $828,794 with 8 wins and 3 seconds from 11 starts.
