Gf Shes Sinful earned the role of fastest qualifier for Saturday’s $744,580 Ruidoso Derby at the Downs at Albuquerque by blistering through 400 yards in 18.98 seconds in the fifth of seven time trials on May 24. It is not the first time she has held that distinction. Last fall, Gf Shes Sinful was the fastest qualifier for the $910,508 Texas Classic Futurity at Lone Star Park. In the final on Nov. 15, Gf Shes Sinful was eliminated from contention at the start after breaking slightly slowly and bumping with a rival. She finished last of 10. The Ruidoso Derby trial is Gf Shes Sinful’s only subsequent start, and has left trainer Wes Giles hopeful the filly can collect her first major prize. “It’s great to see her run like that,” Giles said of the time trial. “When they run like that, it’s a little over your expectations. “We thought every one of her works this spring were really good.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! The Ruidoso Derby is being run at Albuquerque after the entirety of the Ruidoso Downs meeting was moved to the northern New Mexico track earlier this year. In July of the last two years, Ruidoso Downs, located in the southern part of the state, has been flooded by runoff from nearby mountains that sustained widespread loss of vegetation in a massive forest fire in June 2024. It is not clear when racing will resume at Ruidoso Downs. The latter weeks of the 2024 and 2025 Ruidoso Downs meetings were held at Albuquerque, including the famous All American Futurity on Labor Day. Gf Shes Sinful, who races for All In Partners, has won 4 of 5 starts. The Texas Classic Futurity was her first appearance in a final. Saturday’s Ruidoso Derby will have slightly different conditions than the time trials. The race has a post time of 9:50 p.m. Mountain, well after sunset. The trials were run in the afternoon. Gf Shes Sinful, who will be ridden by Noe Garcia, Jr., drew the inside post in a field of 10. She won a trial for the Texas Classic Futurity from that position. Giles expressed a slight concern about how Gf Shes Sinful will perform in the evening when the track is flood-lit. “I don’t know whether lights or glare will bother her on the inside,” he said. Regardless of how she breaks, Gf Shes Sinful will have no room for error. “You better not make a mistake,” he said. The Ruidoso Derby field lacks a stakes winner, although several have run in major stakes. Politician V and Jarvis V, who were beaten in the Ruidoso Derby trials, were second and third in the Los Alamitos Winter Derby in February. Envestor, fourth in the $3 million All American Futurity last September, won a division of the Ruidoso Derby trials in his first start of 2026. Rf Runaway Cowboy, second in the Texas Classic Futurity, was second in a division of the Ruidoso Derby trials in his first start this year.
