Fast works a sale draw in Texas

Speed was rewarded Tuesday at the Fasig-Tipton Texas 2-year-old auction, where fast workers at the under-tack preview brought some of the day's highest prices.

By late afternoon, a pair of juveniles had brought the session-leading price of $70,000 at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas. The first of those, Hip No. 98, was a Van Nistelrooy filly who had the under-tack show's fastest quarter-mile time of 21 seconds on April 1. Agent Mark Cornett bought the filly, who is a daughter of the unraced Grindstone mare Miss Malley; Cornett made the purchase for Paul Mostert. The filly is from the family of Grade 1 winner Dreamy Mimi.

Hip No. 169, a Valid Expectations colt out of Salsa Stacy, also brought a $70,000 final bid. He had breezed a quarter-mile in 22.20 at the under-tack show. Cash Asmussen's Cashmark Farm, agent, sold the colt to William H. Bright. The colt is a half-brother to stakes winner Philadelphia Jim.

The one-day sale was to conclude Tuesday night.
