Fast maiden winner War Stopper works for Gotham

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – War Stopper, a four-length maiden winner here on Jan. 11, worked a half-mile in 49.96 seconds Tuesday morning over the Belmont Park training track in preparation for a start in the Grade 3, $300,000 Gotham Stakes on March 7.
Trainer Rudy Rodriguez, aboard for the work, said he galloped out a strong quarter of a mile past the wire.

“The horse is coming around good,” Rodriguez said. “I may blow him out an easy half-mile next week. He came out of this work good.”
War Stopper, a son of Declaration of War, began his career on turf with two disappointing results. He finished fifth in a dirt race on Dec. 7 from which five horses have come back to win their maidens.
War Stopper wore blinkers for the first time in his maiden victory, for which he earned a 93 Beyer Speed Figure.
