OLDSMAR, Fla. – Nothing generates more interest and excitement this time of year more than a 3-year-old that can run.On Saturday, trainer Gerald Bennett sent out Fast Flying Rumor to make his third start since being claimed for $25,000. After breaking well, Fast Flying Rumor was content to sit just off the pace outside under Daniel Centeno in the 6 1/2-furlong first-level optional $75,000 claiming sprint. When Centeno let Fast Flying Rumor know it was time to get serious, the response was something to see.Kicking into gear in just a few strides, Fast Flying Rumor roared to the front leaving the turn, having sped through a middle quarter-mile in 24.41 seconds. He opened a comfortable lead and came home with more than two lengths to spare while covering the distance in a 1:16.38, less than a second off the track record. It was the fifth start for Fast Flying Rumor, and Bennett said he thinks the Florida-bred West Acre gelding is just starting to come into his own.“We thought we might have something when we took him,” said Bennett, who celebrated his 71st birthday last week, “and now he’s really starting to get his head into it. After his last race, we put a figure-eight [bridle] on him and that’s helped. He’s a smart horse and nothing bothers him. When we have to go in the stall, he just stands there like an old cow. Those are the kind you want, the ones that save their energy for racing instead of tearing the stall down.”While Fast Flying Rumor has been sprinting up to this point, Bennett feels the horse’s running style and way of traveling indicate he will be able to handle more distance. The trainer is looking at a number of options, among them the Grade 3, $400,000 Illinois Derby at 1 1/8 miles on April 18. And of course there’s the $75,000 Ocala Breeders’ Sale Sophomore Stakes at seven furlongs here on Florida Cup Day, April 4.Fast Flying Rumor was one of three winners Saturday for Bennett, who also posted a training triple the previous Saturday. Bennett, who is having his best meet ever at Tampa Bay Downs, came right back Sunday with two more victories and now leads all trainers this meeting with 31 wins. Bennett is just four wins shy of saddling 3,500 winners in his career.Homeister having solid meetJockey Rosemary Homeister Jr. is quietly having a solid meet since returning to Tampa Bay Downs to ride for the first time in three seasons.Homeister ranked among the leaders here with 98 wins during the 2009-10 meeting. She discovered she was pregnant in the middle of the 2012 meeting and left riding for the birth of her daughter Victoria Rose. After spending the last few winters at other venues, Homeister returned to Tampa this fall. She got off to a slow start but after hooking up with agent Steve Elsey in mid-January Homeister has been winning at a steady clip. Among her 28 wins at the meeting is the Suncoast Stakes aboard Include Betty. Regally bred gelding winsThere are few in the business better than Graham Motion when it comes to bringing horses back off problems and layoffs.A perfect example of that is Wing Foot. By Giant’s Causeway out of the Diesis mare Vignette, Wing Foot was cut out to be a good one. His mother was a stakes winner and his half-brother Lucerno was a Group 1 stakes winner who earned more than $1.1 million in Europe.Wing Foot sustained an injury behind in his second start and Motion gave him plenty of time to recover while continuing to grow and mature. After being gelded, he was sent to Fair Hill in Maryland and then to Palm Bay Meadows in Florida.Wing Foot returned to action for the first time in nine months in Sunday’s sixth race at Tampa. After lagging well off the pace early, Wing Foot swung to the outside turning for home under Luis Garcia and unleashed a late charge that carried him past the leaders in the shadow of the wire.Don’t be surprised to see Wing Foot racing with stakes company somewhere this season.
