Barbara D. Livingston This Vekoma colt went for $300,000, one of the top-priced lots at the Fasig-Tipton New York-bred preferred yearling sale.

For the first time, Fasig-Tipton’s two Saratoga yearling sales traded more than $100 million between them in the span of a week.

“We started last Monday at 6:30, we finished this week on Monday at about 5 o'clock, and in that week we sold over $100 million worth of horses,” Fasig-Tipton president and CEO Boyd Browning Jr. said. “We've never done that before. So that's a pretty significant accomplishment. It's something that we're proud of. That's meaningful, and that's significant to our industry.”

Fasig-Tipton’s Saratoga selected yearling sale on Aug. 5-6 saw 154 yearlings sold for a record gross of $82,160,000. The New York-bred preferred yearling sale on Aug. 11-12 finished with 182 sold for $19,095,500. Together, 336 yearlings changed hands in Saratoga for a total of $101,255,500.

“The two sales are very complimentary to each other – they work hand in hand,” Browning said.

Last year, the select sale grossed $75,055,000 from 154 sold, and the New York-bred sale grossed a record $20,929,000 from a larger catalog of 220 sold, resulting in a gross of $95,984,000 from the 374 sold in a week.

Galilean has top New York-sired yearling at sale

The top price for a New York stallion at the Fasig-Tipton New York-bred preferred yearling sale was a $220,000 colt from the first crop of Galilean, who cracked the top 20 prices. The colt, a half-brother to stakes winner Set and stakes-placed Busy Morning, was purchased by Jacob West, as agent for Repole Stable.

Galilean was himself a California-bred who has now crossed the country for his stud career, standing at Hidden Lake Farm in Stillwater, N.Y. The son of well-regarded sire-of-sires Uncle Mo won six restricted black-type stakes, including the 2019 California Cup Derby. He was third in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes.

Galilean stood for $7,000 in his first season at stud and now stands for $3,500.
