Fasig-Tipton sale results mixed
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Led by four horses that sold for $200,000 or more, Fasig-Tipton Kentucky's winter mixed sale ended Monday in Lexington with mixed results.
After its Sunday opener posted gains across the board, the two-day auction concluded with declines in gross and average but an increase in median price. In total, the auction sold 371 horses for $6,332,300, down 19 percent from last year's edition, which sold 444 horses. This year's average price dipped slightly, falling from $17,506 last season to $17,068. But the median rose 40 percent to $7,000. The buy-back rate decreased from 30 percent last year to 25 percent in 2007.
The $295,000 sale topper sold at Sunday's opening session. That was the 9-year-old Mining mare Her Secret, who was cataloged in foal to Successful Appeal. Her Secret is the dam of Grade 2 winner Carmandia and a half-sister to the dam of Kentucky Derby runner-up Closing Argument. James M. Herbener Jr., agent, sold Her Secret to AGS Thoroughbreds Ltd.
At Monday's final session, the topper was the $250,000 filly Dancing Band, whom agent E.A. Blythe purchased from the Paramount Sales agency. The 4-year-old Dixieland Band filly is out of Grade 3 winner Miss Ra He Ra and was cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect.
OBS sale: Johannesburg colt fastest
A colt by Johannesburg posted the fastest eighth-mile breeze in 10 seconds flat Sunday at the final under-tack show before the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s select juvenile sale. The auction was scheduled for Tuesday at the OBS facility in Ocala, Fla.
The Johannesburg colt will sell as Hip No. 167 and is out of the Star de Naskra mare Star de Mint, a half-sister to 2003 Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Adoration. True South, agent, is the consignor.
A pair of 2-year-olds breezed in 21.20 for the day's fastest quarter-mile time. They were Hip No. 90, a Carson City colt out of Jenna S., by Kris S., and Hip No. 180, a colt by Trippi out of Touch the Future, by Once Wild. Don Graham, agent, is the consignor for the Carson
City colt. Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds consigns the Trippi colt.
