Fasig-Tipton November: Gamine tops sale at $7M; average, median slip

Fasig-Tipton Gamine brings a final bid of $7 million from Coolmore to top the Fasig-Tipton November sale of broomares.

In a sales ring that hosted a steady procession of standout fillies and mares, champion Gamine reached the summit by bringing $7 million to top Sunday night’s November Sale at Fasig-Tipton in Lexington, Ky.

M.V. Magnier of Coolmore signed the ticket for Gamine and also for Campanelle, who brought $5 million to tie as the second-highest seller with Shedaresthedevil. The latter was purchased by Whisper Hill Farm.

The breeding stock sale was held the day after the conclusion of the Breeders’ Cup at nearby Keeneland. There were 169 horses sold Sunday for total receipts of $101,214,000, or an average of $598,899, according to figures posted by Fasig-Tipton. There were 71 horses that did not sell. The median was $250,000.

At the corresponding sale a year ago, 149 horses sold for $103,699,000, for an average of $695,966. There were 45 horses that did not sell. The median was $300,000.

“Another remarkable November sale just concluded here at Fasig-Tipton in 2022,” Boyd Browning Jr., president and CEO of Fasig-Tipton, said in a post-sale press conference Sunday. “Last year we surpassed $100 million in gross for the first time and it’s kind of been one of those goals that you have in your own mind, dreamt about, but didn’t think it was realistic to really accomplish that. We were fortunate enough to do it last year and we did it again this year. It’s an absolute reflection of the quality of horses.”

Gamine is a 5-year-old daughter of Into Mischief who was consigned by Hill ‘n’ Dale at Xalapa, agent. She was announced in foal to Quality Road. It will be the first foal for the mare, who won the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint as a 3-year-old in 2020. Overall, Gamine won five Grade 1 races and earned more than $1.7 million in a career in which she went 9 for 11. She is from the winning Kafwain mare Penny Jane and as a 2-year-old at auction brought $1.8 million.

“It’s always an honor and a privilege to sell a great mare,” John Sikura of Hill ‘n’ Dale said in an interview Fasig-Tipton posted to social media. “She’s a magnificent physical specimen. She presented herself very well. Great racemare. All the charisma and class you’d expect from a great mare.”

Shedaresthedevil, who won the Kentucky Oaks in 2020 and who in her last start was third in the Grade 1 Clement Hirsch in August at Del Mar, is bound for the breeding shed. Plans are for her to go to a top sire – perhaps Gun Runner or the recently retired Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Flightline, Mandy Pope of Whisper Hill Farm said. The bidding climbed very quickly for Shedaresthedevil, who was consigned by agent Hunter Valley Farm.

Campanelle last raced Saturday, and finished a troubled seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. She is a multiple Group 1 winner of more than $1 million and was sold as either a racing or broodmare prospect. As she came into the ring, a sale announcer described her as “simply radiant.” She was consigned by Eaton Sales, agent, for Stonestreet Stables.

Blue Stripe, who also raced Saturday and finished second by a nose in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, brought $4 million from Narvick International. She was bred in Argentina and is a half-sister to Blue Prize, winner of the BC Distaff in 2019 and an earner of more than $2.6 million. Blue Stripe, who was one of the last hips to sell, was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency. She is a 5-year-old by Equal Stripes.

Bellafina also brought $4 million, from Magnier. She is believed to be in foal to Tiz the Law. Bellafina, a multiple Grade 1 winner of more than $1.6 million, was consigned by agent Eaton Sales. Earlier in the sale, Bellafina’s weanling daughter by Uncle Mo brought $1.3 million.

There were a total of 31 individuals that sold for $1 million or more, according to sales results posted by Fasig-Tipton. The list includes Wicked Whisper ($2.9 million, with the buyer Whisper Hill Farm); Going Global ($2.5 million, BBA Ireland), and Kalypso ($2.1 million Katsumi Yoshida.)
