Fasig-Tipton Midlantic mixed sale concludes 2012 auction season

Nicole Russo|Dec 02, 2012

Fasig-Tipton will conduct its Midlantic December mixed sale on Monday at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Md. There are 243 horses cataloged for the single-session sale, which begins at 11 a.m. Eastern. It is the last public auction in North America this year.

The auction opens with 83 in-foal mares and 21 broodmare prospects, followed by 92 weanlings. The remainder of the catalog includes yearlings, horses of racing age, and racing/broodmare prospects. The catalog is smaller than the 2011 sale, during which 260 horses sold for a total of $3,739,350. The average price was $14,382 and the median was $5,200, all increases from 2010, when 158 horses sold for $968,100, an average of $6,127 and median of $2,000.

Last year’s sale included a large consignments the second phase of the dispersal of the late Carl Lizza and his Flying Zee Stable. A total of 96 horses from the dispersal sold for a collective $2,315,350. The dispersal included the sale’s only two six-figure horses, the stakes-producing Salt Lake mare Salty Romance, who was purchased for $260,000 by Blue Devil Racing, and a $205,000 Hard Spun weanling colt purchased by Dundrum Farm.

Among the horses highlighting the catalog this year is the 2-year-old Harlan’s Holiday filly La La’s Cookin, a placed runner offered as a racing or broodmare prospect. Consigned by Bill Reightler, agent, the filly is cataloged as a supplemental entry and will be the final horse offered in the sale.

Out of the Notebook mare Cricket Box, La La’s Cookin is a half-sister to Super Derby winner Outofthebox and stakes winner Ruff and Ready. The filly is a half-sister to Unlimited Pleasure, dam of graded stakes winners Unlimited Budget, Jardin, and Beacon Shine, and to Box of Joy, dam of graded stakes winner Tackleberry.

Also in the catalog is a weanling half-sister to Unbridled Command, who won the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby on Nov. 25. The Read the Footnotes weanling filly, out of the Unbridled’s Song mare Unbridled Betty, is consigned by Rhapsody Farm and Hidden Lake Farm, agents.

The Midlantic sale includes mares in foal to sires such as Alphabet Soup, Drosselmeyer, Dublin, Forestry, Kodiak Kowboy, Quiet American, Tizway, and War Chant.

Sires of weanlings in the sale include Bluegrass Cat, Desert Party, Einstein, Grand Slam, Munnings, Sharp Humor, and Yes It’s True.
