Fasig-Tipton Debutante winner Stone Silent pointing for Del Mar stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. – After winning her debut in Saturday’s $100,500 Fasig-Tipton Debutante at five furlongs at Santa Anita, Stone Silent will be considered for two graded stakes at Del Mar this summer – the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes at six furlongs on Aug. 13 and the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante at seven furlongs on Sept. 10.
Trainer John Sadler thinks she’ll have a better chance to win a graded stakes in a sprint than going two turns.
“She’s just precocious,” Sadler said on Sunday. “She’s definitely a one-turn horse.”
Apparently, a pretty good one, too. Stone Silent led throughout the Fasig-Tipton Debutante, finishing in 58.28 seconds. Later on Saturday’s program, the filly Absolutely Zero beat males in the $102,000 Fasig-Tipton Futurity, running five furlongs in 59.09 seconds.
Stone Silent (3-1) pulled clear to win by 3 1/4 lengths over Tom’s Regret, the 3-5 favorite, who recovered from a stumble at the start to finish second.
Making her third start, Tom’s Regret was beaten for the first time. She won a maiden special weight race for California-bred fillies on April 15 and the Kentucky Juvenile Stakes against males at Churchill Downs on May 5.
Stone Silent, a Florida-bred by Adios Charlie, was purchased for $410,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. auction of 2-year-olds in training in March. Stone Silent races for Michael Talla, West Point Thoroughbreds, and Edwin Barker.
In the Fasig-Tipton Futurity, Absolutely Zero disputed the pace throughout to win by a length over Tahoma.
Absolutely Zero, a California-bred filly by Nyquist, races for owners and breeders Paul and Zillah Reddam and trainer Doug O’Neill. Absolutely Zero won a maiden special weight race against open-company fillies in her debut in May.
O’Neill said in a text message on Saturday that he ran Absolutely Zero against males to avoid running against Tom’s Regret.
Absolutely Zero and Tom’s Regret could face Stone Silent in the $200,000 Sorrento or the $300,000 Del Mar Debutante. Sadler said Fasig-Tipton Futurity third-place finisher Pure Fire could start in a maiden special weight race or the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at six furlongs at Del Mar on Aug. 14.
