Prices in several leading categories showed declines from 2021 at Tuesday’s Fasig-Tipton California sale of yearlings and horses of racing age, the state’s annual leading Thoroughbred auction.

The one-day sale, held at Fairplex in Pomona, saw 205 horses sell for $6,257,100, or an average of $30,522, according to sale company data. There were 71 horses listed as not sold.

The gross declined 10.8 percent from the 2021 figure of $6,933,550, while the average fell 28.3 percent from $39,173 in 2021. There were 177 horses listed as sold in 2021.

The average price on Tuesday was considerably higher than the 2020 figure of $22,504 when the sale was held at Los Alamitos in Orange County because of crowd restrictions in place at the time in Los Angeles County during the early months of the pandemic.

Big Slew, a yearling filly by Mr. Big, sold for $250,000 to Todd Tomazic of Yorba Linda, Calif., the most expensive hip of Tuesday’s auction and one of 14 yearlings and horses of racing age to sell for $100,000 or more.

Consigned by Andy Havens Bloodstock, agent, the filly is out of Misszippityslewda and is a full sister to the 5-year-old mare Big Sweep, who won two stakes for 3-year-old statebreds in 2020 – the Echo Eddie Stakes against males at six furlongs at Santa Anita and the Fleet Treat Stakes against fillies at seven furlongs at Del Mar.

Big Sweep has won 4 of 13 starts and earned $367,958.

Fillies dominated the sale. Samantha Siegel, who races as Jay Em Ess Stable, paid $200,000 for California-bred fillies by Good Magic and Stanford. Both were consigned by Critter Creek Farm, agent.

The leading colt, a California-bred by Maclean’s Music, was bought for $145,000 by Scanlon Training and Sales from Havens Bloodstock, agent for Liberty Road Stables.

The sale had a sizable consignment of yearling and horses of racing age owned by Paul and Zillah Reddam.

Hockey Dad, third in the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby on turf in 2021 and third in an allowance race on turf at Del Mar on Sept. 10 for the Reddams, was purchased for $175,000 by Rockingham Ranch-Sweetwater Trading, agent. Hockey Dad is a 4-year-old California-bred colt by Nyquist.
