LEXINGTON, Ky. – Keeneland says the final four-day stretch of the fall meet starts Wednesday, but the track isn’t fooling anybody. Technically, yes, the 17-day fall meet ends Saturday, but then there’s that little something called the Breeders’ Cup that follows. A pair of $58,000, first-level allowances helps to get things moving Wednesday, when first post for an eight-race card is 1:05 p.m. Eastern. The deeper of the two is race 7, a turf route that drew an oversubscribed field of 3-year-olds and up. Farz, with a field-high 86 Beyer Speed Figure from a recent maiden win over the local course for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, is among a handful of viable contenders in a well-matched lineup that also can count Vigilante, Generous Kitten, and Street Tough as major players. Only as many as 10 can start, as Keeneland continues to restrict its field size while employing inner rails well out onto the turf course to preserve the inner paths for the Breeders’ Cup. The earlier Wednesday allowance (race 6) is for 2-year-old fillies going 1 1/16 miles, with Southern Girl likely to be favored in a field of six for Larry Jones. ALLOWANCE (RACE 7) KEY CONTENDERS Farz (Last 3 Beyers: 86-79-69) ◗ This Smart Strike colt really persevered when knocking out his maiden condition on opening weekend at 1 3/16 miles and will have Shaun Bridgmohan aboard this time while trying to work out a decent trip from his outside post. ◗ It’s been another productive Keeneland meet for Lexington native McLaughlin, whose other wins have come with Pin Up, Robillard, and the exciting 3-year-old Watershed. Vigilante (Last 3 Beyers: 85-75-76) ◗ This Tiznow colt has breezed four times since his gritty maiden victory on the Aug. 29 Travers undercard at Saratoga for Wayne Catalano, who’s always a threat with this type. Generous Kitten (Last 3 Beyers: 79-66-77) ◗ Among the entire field, only he and Thunder Moon have won more than once, as he rallied from well back to win a starter allowance on turf on closing day at Saratoga for Ken and Sarah Ramsey. Street Tough (Last 3 Beyers: 80-73-71) ◗ This Street Sense colt is making steady progress, having followed an Ellis Park maiden victory with a solid effort last month at Kentucky Downs in his first crack at this condition.
