LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Somewhere, Matt Winn is smiling. The man widely credited with shaping the Kentucky Derby into an iconic slice of Americana would fully approve of all the festivities Saturday night at Churchill Downs, especially the raucous cheers that will greet Triple Crown winner American Pharoah when the colt is paraded before his adoring fans. As the last of four straight graded races on the Downs After Dark program, the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes will bring the night full circle: Bob Baffert and Victor Espinoza, the trainer and jockey of American Pharoah, will be represented by the solid favorite, Fame and Power, in the $100,000 Matt Winn. If the colt performs as well as he did four weeks ago in wiring the Sir Barton Stakes on the Preakness undercard, the other seven 3-year-olds in the 1 1/16-mile race figure to be running for second. Owned by Juddmonte Farms, Fame and Power brings a decisive edge in Beyer Speed Figures into the Winn, which closes out an all-stakes pick four as the ninth of 11 races (post time, 10:13 p.m. Eastern). The colt earned a field-high 99 Beyer in that front-running triumph and looks like the dominant speed in this one, too. :: Bet the Matt Winn and the Regret with DRF Bets. Get up to a $500 cash bonus! Two of his Winn opponents chased him at Pimlico: Bold Conquest ran on to finish second by three lengths and should be the second wagering choice in here, while Henry Jones pushed the pace before settling for a distant fourth. Whereas the Winn has an obvious favorite in Fame and Power, the same cannot be said for the Grade 3 race that kicks off the all-stakes pick four: the $100,000 Regret. The Regret (race 6, post 8:32), for 3-year-old fillies going 1 1/8 miles on the turf, begins the sequence with no clear-cut choice in its field of seven. Don’t Leave Me is a lukewarm 3-1 program favorite. Bred and owned by Pin Oak Stable, Don’t Leave Me breaks from the inside post and is the only graded winner in the Regret lineup, having won the Grade 3 Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park in March before finishing second in her lone subsequent start, the Grade 3 Selene last month at her home track of Woodbine. Javier Castellano has the mount for trainer Malcolm Pierce. On a historical note that ties these two races together, the Regret is named for the filly who won the Derby 100 years ago in a renewal often cited as the most instrumental in Winn’s long reign as Churchill president. Matt Winn (race 9) KEY CONTENDERS Fame and Power (Last 3 Beyers: 99-93-93) ◗ It took him five cracks in the maiden ranks, but once he got that first victory March 8 at Santa Anita, his form has really gotten good. He was third behind Divining Rod and Donworth in the Grade 3 Lexington leading up to the Sir Barton. Bold Conquest (Last 3 Beyers: 94-90-85) ◗ Steve Asmussen-trained colt became acquainted with the power of American Pharoah at Oaklawn Park, finishing third behind him in the Rebel and fifth in the Arkansas Derby. ◗ His lone try over the Churchill dirt resulted in a narrow defeat to stablemate Lucky Player last September in the Grade 3 Iroquois. Regret (race 6) KEY CONTENDERS Don’t Leave Me (Last 3 Beyers: 77-72-50) ◗ It’s been a while since she raced on grass, and her Beyers are not overpowering, but in a race seemingly full of speed (Lady Zuzu, Cristina’s Journey), her running style and overall class could carry her home. Prado’s Sweet Ride (Last 3 Beyers: 67-80-65) ◗ Sixth-place finish as the favorite two weeks ago in Indiana is mitigated by a two-back victory in Tampa and her record of three turf wins from four starts on the surface.
