Falling Sky held off a surging Ledokol by a head to win the $75,000 Trinniberg on Saturday at Gulfstream Park. It was another 1 3/4 lengths back in third to 8-5 favorite Grande Shores.
The Trinniberg, for 3-year-olds and up at seven furlongs, was named for the champion sprinter of 2012.
Falling Sky ($5.60) tracked the pace set by Phish Fan, who took the field through an opening quarter in 22.65 seconds and a half-mile in 44.52. Falling Sky took over from there, and in the stretch fended off Ledokol while covering the distance on a track rated fast in 1:22.63.
Harry Hernandez, an apprentice who had won two races earlier on the card, was aboard Falling Sky for trainer Marty Wolfson.
Falling Sky races for the partnership of Newtown Anner Stud and Joseph Bulger. Earlier in his career, Falling Sky won the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis at Tampa and the Grade 3 Gulfstream Park Sprint. He is a 5-year-old by Lion Heart and he was bred in Pennsylvania by Copper Penny Stables.
