Fall Midlantic yearling sale closes with declines
A Nyquist colt sold for $205,000 on Tuesday to lead the auction overall as the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic fall yearling sale concluded two days of trade at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium.
Fasig-Tipton reported that 289 yearlings, many bred or certified in the regional programs of Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, and other states, sold for gross receipts of $7,078,000. At last year's sale, 386 yearlings changed hands over two days for grosses of $10,266,400.
This week's cumulative average price was $24,491, dipping 8 percent from $26,597 last year. The median fell 20 percent, to $12,000 from $15,000. The buyback rate was 21 percent, compared to 17 percent.
The partnership of Thorostock LLC and Seth Morris Thoroughbreds purchased six horses, including the $205,000 sale topper. The Maryland-bred Nyquist colt was consigned by Becky Davis, as agent.
The April colt is out of the winning Not For Love mare How My Heart Works, dam of Grade 3-placed stakes winner Monday Morning Qb and Group 3-placed Asawer, the latter a full sister to this colt.
How My Heart Works is from the family of several solid producers. The mare is a half-sister to stakes winner Grade 3-placed stakes winner Awesome Flower and Grade 3-placed First Mondays, as well as a full sister to stakes-placed If Not For Her. Awesome Flower is the dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Cyberknife. The granddam of both How My Heart Works and Awesome Flower is stakes winner Well Dressed, the dam of Dubai World Cup winner Well Armed. Grade 1 winners American Patriot and Played Hard also appear on this catalog page.
