Faithful Departed had encountered trouble in a number of her six starts prior to Saturday, including in two stakes attempts at Fair Grounds. In the LaCombe Memorial in March, she encountered plenty of traffic near the quarter pole, and still missed by only half a length. In the Grade 2 Appalachian at Keeneland in early April, she was in tight between horses at the start and fanned seven wide, winding up sixth. Faithful Departed bounced back to overcome waiting in traffic trouble with an inside-rallying allowance win against older foes three weeks later at Churchill Downs, a win that trainer Grant Forster believed gave her a boost. "I felt like the filly was really thriving in her training," Forster said. "I thought she got a lot of confidence out of that win last time." That gave him faith to move the filly back up to graded stakes company, and she responded with a 2 1/4-length victory in the Grade 3, $275,000 Regret Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on the turf on Saturday evening at Churchill Downs. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Faithful Departed ($10.94) sat in a pocket in fourth inside under Jose Ortiz as longshot Surprise Endling led the field through an opening six furlongs of 1:11.34 on the firm turf. Favored Tam Tam, most recently a close second in the Grade 2 Edgewood four weeks ago at Churchill, and Appalachian winner Storm's Wake moved on the outside as the field swallowed up the leader coming toward the head of the stretch. But Ortiz pounced on an opening on the inside and Faithful Departed quickly shot through and extended her stride - and extended her lead to the wire. "I had a ton of horse," Ortiz said. The time for the 1 1/8 miles on the firm turf was 1:46.23. Storm's Wake was second-best by a length over Tam Tam, who was 2 1/4 lengths clear of the rest. Indigo Woods, Trust Account, Dandona, and Surprise Ending rounded out the order of finish. The Regret corresponds in the local 3-year-old turf filly division to the $275,000 Tepin Stakes on June 27 at Churchill. However, as that race cuts back to a mile, Forster said that while Faithful Departed will be nominated to that spot, he is more likely to target the Grade 1, $600,000 Belmont Oaks, at this same 1 1/8 miles, on July 4 at Saratoga. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
