Fairplex: Heavy favorite beaten

POMONA, Calif. - Shezsospiritual ($20.60) trounced four rivals, including odds-on Victory Encounter, in the $57,000 E.B. Johnston Stakes at Fairplex Park.

Trained by Mike Mitchell and ridden by Omar Figueroa, Shezsospiritual won the 1 1/16-mile stakes for fillies and mares by 5 1/2 lengths in 1:44.14. It was her sixth win from 23 starts and makes her one of the favorites for the $100,000 Las Madrinas Handicap Sept. 24 at Fairplex. Victory Encounter, dropping out of graded stakes, finished a lackluster second as the 4-5 favorite; Lucky in Love finished third. Letra de Cambio, the 3-2 second choice, finished last.
