Fairmount track report

COLLINSVILLE, Ill. - There were some scary moments on Tuesday's card, but things could have turned out much worse. In the second race, Somebody Special flipped in the gate, actually turning all the way around in the stall. Jockey Jorge Collazo Sr. was fortunate to escape from the incident with only a broken left foot.

In the eighth race, Mike James's mount, Divot, clipped heels going into the far turn and went down in a tumble, with Prospector's Dream and jockey Mike Gale crashing down right behind them. It looked like an ugly scene, but both horses and their riders escaped relatively unharmed.

Trainer Dawn Haught has an outstanding group of 2-year-olds, having already won two of the four juvenile races run here. Haught has won with Parsaver, a filly she owns in partnership with Roger and Kenny Jansen, and Dawn's Project, who posted a $25.20 upset under apprentice Argelio "Gino" Velasquez.

Haught splits her time among a job as manager of construction for the Collinsville School District, her midsize stable, and a teenage son. She bought Dawn's Project, a gelded son of Roar, for $800 after the Fasig-Tipton mixed sale in February 2001, when he failed to attract interest in the ring because of crooked front legs.

In a rare occurrence Saturday at Arlington, Fairmount horses finished one-two in a stakes, the $75,000-added White Oak Handicap for Illinois-breds. Only a nose separated Tic N Tin from Too Many Bucks at the wire. Tic N Tin has now won the White Oak two years in a row.

Nineteen-year-old apprentice Jorge Carreno scored his first career win in Sunday's seventh with Naab a Chance. Carreno, a native of Mexico City, started his career at Hawthorne this spring before bringing his tack to Fairmount.
