COLLINSVILLE, Ill. - Trainer Leroy Hellman saddled five winners on last Friday night's card, then won with his only starter on Saturday night. Five of the six winners were favored and Hellman finished second and third with his other two starters on Friday night.

The big weekend moved Hellman into a second-place tie with Eddie Essenpreis in the trainer standings with 48 wins apiece going into Tuesday's races. Essenpreis then won one race on Tuesday, while Hellman went 0 for 2. Ralph Martinez, as usual, is in complete control of the trainer standings with 131 wins.

* Cart's on Cruise, a 2-year-old homebred owned by Jake Bryant's J B Stables, looks to be coming to hand at just the right time for trainer Carmelo Mendoza. Cart's on Cruise won the third leg of the Juvenile Sprint Series Saturday night in just his second career start, and is on target for the $35,000-added Marluel's Troy Stakes, part of Illinois Day here on Tuesday. Cart's on Cruise, a gelding by J B Stables' sire Cartwright, vied for the lead while three wide under Jorge Carreno before edging clear of favored King's Category in the stretch. Cart's on Cruise returned $15.60 and covered six furlongs in 1:14.20.

The third edition of Illinois Day will feature five $35,000-added stakes races and is headed by the one-mile Pete Condellone Handicap for 3-year-olds and up. Baker Road, owned by Diamond Racing Inc. and trained by Leo Gabriel, won the Condellone last year and is expected to ship in from Chicago for an attempted repeat.
