Fairmount track report

COLLINSVILLE, Ill. - Apprentice riders won five of the first six races on Fairmount's Sunday afternoon card, which is believed to be unprecedented in track history.

In the first Argelio "Gino" Velasquez scored with Fort Out East ($6). Heather Irion won the second aboard Hey Hey ($9.20), Iram "Aaron" Diego booted home Hecando ($5) in the third, and Jorge Carreno won the fourth on Major Dundee ($3.40).

Jesse Wheat Jr. took the sixth with Moe B Dick ($2.80). Wheat leads the apprentice standings with 48 wins, with Irion and Velasquez tied for second at 40. Irion had been comfortably in front before missing two months recuperating from a training accident.

In Sunday's ninth race, Cindy Medina became the first female jockey to reach the 1,000-win milestone while riding at Fairmount. The win came in a wire-to-wire performance by Cobra Devil ($8.60), trained by Medina's first-call client, Eddie Essenpreis.

Medina got a start on her second thousand on Tuesday, piloting Sheza Tomboy to an upset $54.20 win.

Tommy Pompell has dominated the jockey standings from day one of the meet and on Tuesday afternoon he added four more wins. This will Pompell's last week here, however, as he plans to move on to Hoosier Park, which opens its meet Aug. 29.
