Fair Grounds: Inspired scores upset in Pan Zareta

Lou Hodges Jr. Inspired (right), with John Velazquez riding, wins the Pan Zareta.

Inspired shot to the lead from her outside post before proceeding to turn back favored Wild About Marie in a front-running upset Saturday in the 47th running of the $75,000 Pan Zareta Stakes at Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

Inspired and her jockey, John Velazquez, both were in from south Florida, where winning trainer Allen Iwinski is currently based. She returned $32.80 to win after finishing 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.47 over a turf course rated good.

Wild About Marie, 4 for 4 over the Fair Grounds turf course coming into the Pan Zareta, finished willingly while clearly second-best, 1 1/2 lengths back of the winner as the 2-1 favorite. Flash Mash was third, another 1 1/4 lengths back in a field of 10 fillies and mares.

Inspired now has won two stakes, and four races overall, from 14 career starts. A 5-year-old chestnut mare by Unbridled's Song, Inspired is owned by her breeder, Peter Blum.

The race was marred by the breakdown midway through the turn of the second choice, Rapport, who was attending the pace under Brian Hernandez Jr. A stewards' inquiry into the incident produced no change. Rapport was euthanized on the track after a condylar fracture was found in her in left foreleg. Hernandez was not injured.
