Fair Grounds horses to watch: Week of March 15
COZZE UP LADY
Trainer: Bret Calhoun
Last race: March 4, 8th
Finish: 1st by a nose
Beyer: 84
Of the 46 dirt races during the recent six-day Fair Grounds racing week, only one was won by a closer. Not only did Cozze Up Lady close, but she still was last of eight after turning into the stretch. The speed figure does not do her run justice, and better still, this filly almost certainly is better at seven furlongs on synthetic (next stop: Keeneland) than going six furlongs on dirt.
BILLY TWO HATS
Trainer: Steve Margolis
Last race: March 9, 7th
Finish: 3rd by 3/4
Beyer: 83
Blinkers added did get him into the race sooner but perhaps a little too soon. He was somewhat keen while close inside and wound up getting checked and dropping out on the turn. I thought he was done, but he came with a good run to just miss second in a race controlled by a front-runner. He’s overdue for a breakthrough win.
IS SILVER GOOD
Trainer: Mike Maker
Last race: March 6, 5th
Finish: 3rd by 1 1/4
Beyer: 73
Rare stretch runner to make ground during the entire week. Claimed by sharp connections and should be reasonably spotted upon return.
