Fair Grounds horses to watch: Week of Jan. 4
MADAME NANCY
Trainer: Pavel Vaschenko
Last race: Dec. 28, 7th
Finish: 5th by 11
Beyer: 52
Was meant for turf in this spot but was rained onto dirt. Rallied up the rail midrace but did not show her best on a sloppy, sealed main track. Await return to lawn at similar class level ($25,000 nonwinners-of-two-lifetime claiming).
IDEFROMTHEBAYOU
Trainer: Karl Broberg
Last race: Dec. 29, 2nd
Finish: 2nd by 3
Beyer: 65
Shuffled back on the far turn of this route and awaited room along the rail while the winner skimmed outside and in the clear. Finished with decent energy and can win at this class level (Louisiana-bred N1X allowance/$12,500 claiming).
WAJIR ON ME
Trainer: Wes Hawley
Last race: Dec. 29, 3rd
Finish: 2nd by 2
Beyer: 71
Third straight bad trip this meet. Had run in the stretch behind still another false pace (he could use fast splits) but was blocked twice as his jockey tried to find room, finally getting through between horses too late.
THIEVES GUILD
Trainer: James Toner
Last race: Dec. 29, 6th
Finish: Second by neck
Beyer: 74
Debuting 2-year-old filly had the lead in midstretch, but the twice-started inside-speed favorite came back and nipped her on the wire. Her action is that of a turf horse, and her dam was a turf sprinter. Should be tough when she gets on the lawn.
