Fair Grounds horses to watch: Week of Jan. 11
HARD ACES
Trainer: Larry Jones
Last race: Jan. 1, 8th
Finish: 1st by 3/4
Beyer: 85
He stayed the 1 1/8 miles of this race and then some. Breaking from an outside post in an off-the-turf heat, he was hung four wide on the first turn and at least three wide on the second but kept on grinding to beat a decent allowance field. Probably not a stakes horse but can knock out another allowance win.
BETSY’S BOY
Trainer: Patricia West
Last race: Jan. 1, 4th
Finish: 3rd by 3/4
Beyer: 75
Trouble early and traffic late, and he finished with good energy in his first start since late October at Hawthorne. Should have some room to come forward in his next start.
MARGIN
Trainer: Al Stall
Last race: Jan. 4, 3rd
Finish: 4th by 11 1/4
Beyer: 70
This second-time starter coming back from a long break was entered for turf but rained onto dirt. The winner scored by 6 1/2 lengths after leading through very slow splits, while this horse ran on decently late in a race that should have him set for a move to grass.
