Fair Grounds horses to watch: Week of Dec. 14
SUAVEBERRY
Trainer: Danny Pish
Last race: Dec. 5, 8th
Finish: 4th by 1 3/4
Beyer: 47
There was zero pace in this 7 1/2-furlong turf race, and this filly still was 11th at the second call. She was steadied and pulled very wide around the turn and into the stretch and did well to finish as close as she did in her first start with other La.-breds. Little more distance couldn’t hurt next time.
IDOL CAT
Trainer: Mike Burgess
Last race: Dec. 7, 6th
Finish: 5th by 3 1/4
Beyer: 71
This race was rained off grass and think further improvement this La.-bred might make will come on turf. In any case, he was hung wide on both turns and not beaten all that far. Worth a long look when back on grass.
ELUSIVE KNOLL
Trainer: Frank Springer
Last race: Dec. 8, 8th
Finish: 1st by 1 1/2
Beyer: 59
Won this race, despite it being rained off turf. The horse’s big forward move this past summer came when this barn switched him to grass routes. This was his first try with La.-breds and, back on preferred surface, he can successfully climb the allowance ladder at a price.
