Eysa Jess Jumpn holds on in rich Lee Berwick Futurity
Eysa Jess Jumpn held off the late charge of Mr Coahuila for a head win in Saturday night’s $700,000 Lee Berwick Futurity at Delta Downs The race was the richest of seven Quarter Horse stakes on the final card of the meet.
Purses for the Louisiana Showcase Night card of 12 races for Louisiana-breds totaled $1.4 million.
Eysa Jess Jumpn ($5.80) jumped out to the lead at the start and maintained the advantage to the wire while covering 350 yards on a fast track in 17.40 seconds. David Alvarez was aboard for trainer Josue Huitron.
Eysa Jess Jumpn was the favorite after setting the fastest qualifying time for the Lee Berwick, winning her trial in 17.28 on a night of 14 trials last month at Delta. She races for Jose Estrada Quarter Horses.
Huitron told turf publicist Martha Claussen in a televised post-race interview that Eysa Jess Jumpn could run next at Fair Grounds.
“We need to see how she comes out of the race,” he said.
In other stakes, Featuring Fast Jess ($10.40) was a three-quarter-length winner over favorite Shesa Diamond Diva in the $268,655 Louisiana-bred Derby, and Lightemupwithcharm ($4.20) won the $100,000 Louisiana Classic by a head over San Lorenzo Coronoa. Lightemupwithcharm covered 440 yards in 21.43.
