Eye of Taurus starts fall meet with Revidere victory

Mike Farrell|Sep 11, 2010

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Eye of Taurus reeled in the front-running Giant Mover by one length on Saturday to capture the $76,650 Revidere Stakes for fillies and mares on the turf at Monmouth Park.

The Revidere was the main event on the first card of Monmouth's fall meet. The track is running on a Saturday-and-Sunday schedule through Nov. 21.

Eye of Taurus got her first win of the season in five starts, with the last four coming at Monmouth. A 4-year-old trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, Eye of Taurus had been close in every race without being able to break through until the Revidere.

"We had talked before the race that she had run very well at this track," said assistant trainer Andrew St. Lawrence. "We'd been a little unlucky in our trips, and she was beat by some nice horses. She got a good trip today."

Eddie Castro had Eye of Taurus in ideal position, sitting fourth while Giant Mover opened up big lead in the 1 1/16-mile Revidere.
Up by five lengths entering the first turn, Giant Mover continued to set a solid pace down the backstretch and around the final turn.

Eye of Taurus picked up the chase turning for home, and those two battled through the lane until Eye of Taurus edged clear in deep stretch.

"We just sat off the early pace and she relaxed," said Castro. "Nearing the final turn I started to ask her and she really kicked in. She showed a good turn of foot and ran a great race."

It was 7 3/4 lengths back to Talkin About Love in third.

Eye of Taurus paid $6.80 to win as she ran the 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.23 on a firm course before a crowd of 6,349.

Choice Play was fourth, followed by Unbridled Essence, the Grade 3 Matchmaker winner who was the 19-10 favorite, Becky's Exchange, First Ascent, and Trensa.
