GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Express Kid, the runner-up in the Sunland Park Derby who had been under consideration for the Preakness Stakes, had a minor physical setback and is scheduled to return to action in the fall, according to his trainer, Justin Evans. Express Kid is based at Lone Star Park. Last year, he won the Springboard Mile at Remington Park. “We had a little issue,” Evans said. “We had kind of an odd deal, a little hairline come up on the outside of his knee, so he’s going to get 60 days off. We’ll keep him here at the barn and then he’s going to go out – there’s a [nearby] rehab center where they swim them and stuff. He’s going to go swim for about 30 days, 45 days, then kind of resume training about July 1, something like that, to hopefully focus on the Oklahoma Derby and Zia Derby.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Express Kid last worked May 7, breezing five furlongs from the gate in 1:00.60. “We were trying for the Preakness,” Evans said. “We worked him and he worked fantastic. And then we just didn’t like what we saw so we checked into it a little deeper, and caught that, caught it where’s it’s not a major deal or anything, and it’s just going to require a little freshening.” Express Kid was second to Pavlovian by a nose in the Sunland Derby. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
