Express Kid picked up 10 Kentucky Derby points on Saturday night when he pulled a 34-1 upset in the $300,000 Springboard Mile at Remington Park, winning by 6 1/4 lengths over favorite Arctic Beast. It was another 2 1/4 lengths back in third to Royalamerican. Western Man finished fourth and Way Beyond was fifth to round out the points that were available to the first five finishers on a scale of 10-5-3-2-1. The Springboard closed the meet and was showcased on a 12-race card that featured six stakes worth a cumulative $625,000. Express Kid ($71) broke on top from post 11 and proceeded to set the pace, leading the field through fractions of 23.54 seconds for the opening quarter, 47.58 for the half-mile and 1:12.83 for six furlongs. Arctic Beast began making a serious run at the leader from there, but Express Kid had more and went on to cover the distance on a track rated fast in 1:38.99. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! He ran great, really good.” Alvarez was aboard Express Kid for trainer Wade Rarick. Express Kid came into the Springboard Mile off a win in a turf allowance over 7 1/2 furlongs Nov. 6 at Remington. Earlier in his career, he won a maiden special weight at 4 1/2 furlongs at Canterbury Park. “We gave $2,000 for him at the Arizona sale,” Rarick said in an interview conducted by Remington. “I mean, it didn’t matter what he did today, it was a plus. It was good. I couldn’t be more happy for the horse.” Rarick also said Steve Haahr, who owns Express Kid, was deserving of having a runner like Express Kid. Express Kid is a California-bred son of Bodexpress. He earned $180,000 for his win in the Springboard to improve his career mark to 3 for 5, for earnings of $236,902.   :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
