Expected scratch makes Reagan's Edge, Skinny Dip ones to beat
RACE REPLAY IS NOT AVAILABLE
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Caribbean Caper looks like the horse to beat in the $104,000 allowance feature on the last twilight program of the spring meet Thursday, but recalculations may be in order. Trainer Al Stall Jr. said Caribbean Caper “most likely” will be scratched as the only 3-year-old in the race-7 lineup in order to stick with fellow 3-year-olds at a later date. With that known, Reagan’s Edge and Skinny Dip become the fillies to beat in a second-level allowance to be run at six furlongs.
The nominal feature is the second of two allowances on a card that starts at 5 p.m. Eastern. The first is a $102,000, first-level turf route that drew an oversubscribed field of 3-year-olds and up, with Absam, Tulfarris, and Mud Pie the likely favorites. It goes as race 3 and therefore leads off the 20-cent Derby City 6, which has a $150,160 jackpot carryover from last weekend.
Calderon an instant success
Oliver Calderon was doused with the traditional mix of eggs, baby powder, shaving cream, and water after winning with his first-ever mount Sunday. Calderon, competing as a 10-pound apprentice, gave Ship’s Creek ($10.40) a terrific ride in winning the sixth race for trainer Ben Colebrook.
Calderon, a 23-year-old Panama native, is a cousin of standout jockey Luis Saez and has worked as an exercise rider for Colebrook for about three years.
“Great kid,” Colebrook said.
◗ Phil Bauer had his tough-luck streak end in the seventh race Sunday when Played Hard ($8.20) gave the trainer his first win of the meet by leading throughout under Tyler Gaffalione in a two-turn maiden-special race. Bauer endured several wicked beats this spring, including being on the wrong end of very tight photos and having an apparent win taken away when a race was declared no contest.
◗ Trainer Eddie Kenneally is just one away from the 1,000-win milestone after sending out first-timer Point Me By ($30.20) to capture the last race Sunday. Kenneally has two entries here Thursday and three Friday.
