ETOBICOKE, Ontario – With just a week to go before the 161st running of the $1 million Queen’s Plate at Woodbine, the field for the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown is starting to take shape. A total of 16 Canadian-bred 3-year-olds are probable starters for the 1 1/4-mile classic on Tapeta, with the winners of the final stakes preps on Aug. 15, Curlin’s Voyage in the Woodbine Oaks and Clayton in the Plate Trial Stakes, headlining the early field. Trainers Josie Carroll and Kevin Attard will both send out a pair of Queen’s Plate contenders. Carroll, trainer of Oaks winner Curlin’s Voyage, also will send out Mighty Heart, who won his maiden by 4 1/4 lengths on July 11 and most recently was third in an allowance over 1 1/8 miles on Tapeta on Aug. 1. Attard will saddle Plate Trial winner Clayton, along with Merveilleux, who finished third behind Curlin’s Voyage in the Woodbine Oaks. Two other trainers also have multiple horses in the Queen’s Plate probable field. Sid Attard will send out Dotted Line, who was most recently third in the Plate Trial Stakes, and Olliemyboy, who won his maiden over 1 1/8 miles on Aug. 1. Catherine Day Phillips will start Tecumseh’s War, who was second in an allowance over 1 1/8 miles on Aug. 1, and recent maiden winner Holyfield, who won going 1 1/16 miles on the turf Aug. 22. Also among the Queen’s Plate probables are Plate Trial Stakes runner-up Halo Again and fourth-place finisher Glorious Tribute. Halo Again won last season’s Coronation Futurity and captured the Queenston Stakes on July 4. He will ship up from Saratoga for the Queen’s Plate for trainer Steve Asmussen, who captured the final two legs of last season’s Canadian Triple Crown – the Prince of Wales Stakes and the Breeders’ Stakes – with Tone Broke. Glorious Tribute has been a longshot while competing in stakes company over his last four starts for trainer Barb Minshall, but did earn a career-best 83 Beyer Speed Figure when fourth in the Plate Trial on Aug. 15. Famished most recently competed Aug. 28 at Saratoga in a seven-furlong allowance on the dirt and would enter the Queen’s Plate off of a two-week break for trainer John Kimmel. F F Rocket most recently won his maiden on the Tapeta at Presque Isle Downs on Aug. 13, in his first start for trainer Keith Dickey. The remaining four Queen’s Plate probable horses are all based at Woodbine. Golden Wave was second to Halo Again in the Queenston Stakes on July 4 for trainer Michael De Paulo and was most recently fifth in an allowance over 1 1/8 miles on Aug. 1. Truebelieve finished second to Dotted Line in last season’s Kingarvie Stakes and won a six-furlong allowance event on June 28 for trainer Cole Bennett. He was most recently fifth behind Clayton in an allowance over 1 1/16 miles on July 18. Sweepin Hard will be supplemented to the Plate by trainer Danny Vella. Sweepin Hard made his racing debut July 12, but improved while stretching out in his second start Aug. 16, when he won a maiden event over 1 1/8 miles on Tapeta. Rounding out the probable field is Enchant Me for trainer Santino DiPaola, who will enter the Plate as a maiden. He finished second in his most recent start over one mile on turf Aug. 15. Final entries for the Sept. 12 Queen’s Plate are due by 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. The post-position draw will be streamed live on Woodbine’s website at 10 a.m. Queen’s Plate closed to general public Like this weekend’s Kentucky Derby, the Queen’s Plate will be run with no fans in attendance as a result of protocols put in place by the Ontario government amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Current Ontario government protocols limit outdoor gatherings to a maximum of 100 people, while maintaining physical distancing. As a result of the restrictions, Woodbine has created The Queen’s Plate @ Home digital experience on Instagram, which will feature content surrounding the Queen’s Plate’s longstanding traditions of racing, wagering, fashion, music, and gourmet food.
