Exercise rider critical after fall

David Grening|Aug 19, 2008

Parker Buckley, a former jockey and current exercise rider, was listed in critical condition and in a coma Monday at Albany Medical Center after sustaining a head injury during a training accident at Saratoga.

Buckley was galloping a horse for trainer Steve Asmussen when he was unseated at the five-furlong pole on the Oklahoma training track. It was unclear whether Buckley's head hit the rail. Buckley was seen sitting up talking to paramedics and was taken off the track and transported by ambulance to Saratoga Hospital.

According to Asmussen, a CAT scan performed on Buckley showed blood on the brain. Buckley, 40, was then taken by medivac to Albany Medical Center. Asmussen said Buckley lost movement on his right side and later slipped into a coma.
