Exercise rider Bulfrano Andres Bahen badly injured
Exercise rider Bulfrano Andres Bahena, better known as “Chano” on the Gulfstream Park backstretch, was scheduled to undergo back surgery at Jackson Memorial hospital on Wednesday to repair serious injuries he incurred as a result of a mishap in a morning workout Sunday.
Bahena was aboard Halverson who, according to accounts from eyewitnesses, stumbled approaching the eighth pole and subsequently fell on his rider. Halverson, an unraced 2-year-old, got up after the incident and ran off, apparently suffering no serious injuries as a result of the fall. Bahena worked at Gulfstream last winter for trainer Dale Romans before joining trainer Bob Hess’s barn after Romans returned to Kentucky in the spring.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help alleviate some of the financial burdens Bahena and his wife, Monica Garcia, are certain to incur during what is expected to be a very long road to recovery. Donations can be made at gofund.me/052fec54.
