Excessive Heat wires Dash

Mike Welsch|Aug 04, 2007

Excessive Heat used her high speed to dominate the $75,000 Georgia Juvenile Filly Turf Dash, leading throughout to post a decisive 4 3/4-length triumph over Arealhotlover. Salty Wave, who entered the five-furlong grass race undefeated in two previous starts, finished a tiring fourth as the even-money favorite.

Excessive Heat broke alertly to set the pace under leading rider Elvis Trujillo while pressured from the outset by Salty Wave. Excessive Heat, a California-bred daughter of Bring the Heat, disposed of the favorite entering the stretch, withstood a mild bid from Arealhotlover approaching the eighth pole, then drew off despite drifting steadily through the final furlong. Delayed Start finished third, another 5 1/4 lengths behind Arealhotlover.

The Georgia Juvenile Turf was restricted to progeny of the Georgia Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association nominated stallions.

Excessive Heat, a homebred owned in partnership by trainer Wesley Ward and Doknna Butler, covered five furlongs over a "good" turf course in 56.78 seconds. She paid $8.20 as the third choice in a full field of 12 2-year-old fillies and gave Trujillo his fourth win on the card.

"She had excuses for both her previous losses," Ward said. "I thought she would like the turf. I had a chance to work her on it earlier this year at Palm Meadows. I'll try to keep her on the grass when I can."

Trujillo completes sweep on A Sea Trippi

A Sea Trippi gave leading rider Elvis Trujillo a sweep of the afternoon's two stakes races. Trujillo guided A Sea Trippi to a three-length decision over Annabill in the $50,000 Barb's Dancer Stakes.

The win was the second in a row for A Sea Trippi, a 4-year-old daughter of Trippi, who is trained by Ron Spatz for the Buckingham Stable Inc. She covered seven furlongs on a fast track in 1:24.25 and paid $7.80.
